3-Zone Buffer System
Zone 1: Tree roots help stabilize the streambank. Trees provide shade and help cool the stream.
Zone 2: Sediment is trapped within the forest floor. Nutrients are bound to soil particles and taken up by vegetation. Zone 2 can be managed for the harvest of trees and other forest products.
Zone 3: Grasses help control runoff and encourage infiltration of water and pollutants into the soil.
