Where surface water flows across the land and through the buffer, riparian buffers can remove high levels of nitrates, sediment, and sediment-borne contaminants, and moderate amounts of phosphorus. However, their effectiveness is limited in areas of steep slopes, where gullies may form and allow water to bypass the buffer.
Deep groundwater flows that exit directly into the streambed may cause subsurface waters to bypass the buffer entirely.
